Chapter One
The Morning AfterThe morning after my total hip replacement, I lay on my bed with my leg in a sling. I was in excruciating pain. I asked the Lord what did all this mean and He said, "Just call yourself Sister Job and consider Joni Erikson Tada."
Joni is a young lady who has been in a wheelchair since she was 17 years old and has struggled with depression because of her condition. She dove into a lake and broke her neck which has caused her to be paralyzed.
Nevertheless, Joni did not let her handicap stifle her. She yielded it up to God. She has gone places with her handicap. She has written many books and painted pictures with a paint brush in her mouth. She even has her own radio program. She is often seen on television. Joni learned to praise God in her situation and allowed God to cause it to work out for her good because she loved Him.
Before I had my surgery, I was quite apprehensive about it. I told the Lord I didn't want to have another surgery. I asked Him to please heal me supernaturally. He said, "No." For what He had to teach me I must go this way.
My body was wracked with pain. The nurses did what they could to make me comfortable. My surgery was scheduled for Friday, December 5th, 1997. Saturday they took me out of bed and put me in a chair for a few hours. That went very well.
Sunday, after the church service was over, my room was crowded with the saints from the church. You have never seen so many flowers in one room. They lavished me with love.
Monday morning the physical therapist took me for therapy. I walked all the way around the room with the help of the therapist and a walker. My doctors talked about sending me to the Wilmington Hospital to teach me how to walk again, but the therapist told the doctors and the nurse that I didn't need rehabilitation because I was doing so well. My doctor came to me and asked me "What are you doing running around in that therapy room?" They told me to slow down and they did want me to have seven to eight days in the rehabilitation facility.
The hospital agreed to send me to the rehabilitation facility and I was there for eight days. I had physical therapy twice a day and they really worked me hard. I had occupational therapy once a day and that went very well also. I was sent home with a visiting nurse, physical therapist, and an aide to assist me in getting on my feet.
On Christmas Eve, the day after I came home, I started to have chest pains. My family called for an ambulance and they came in and checked my blood pressure and my heart. Then they took me to the hospital. They kept me overnight and sent me home on Christmas Day.
I praised God for that because I was able to take my walker and walk into the living room where the rest of the family was. I sat with my leg propped up. Having all my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around me, the day went well. It was a Merry Christmas after all.
While I was in the hospital, they didn't find anything wrong with my heart, but I continued to be short of breath. I was sent to Philadelphia to see a lung specialist at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. They didn't find anything major. He just suggested that I try doing some exercises like lifting cans out of the cabinet and putting them back in. He said that should build my muscles in my chest. This lasted for quite a while.
Chapter Two
Glenda Gets MarriedMy daughter Glenda was engaged to be married and she feared I would not be alive to see her walk down the aisle. God was shaping my life all the time.
Glenda's wedding was scheduled for July 18th, 1998. Praise God that when that great day came I was in attendance! I had my grandsons Jeremy, and Devon push me half the way down the aisle in a wheel chair. They assisted me out of the wheel chair and I walked the rest of the way with my cane and Jeremy's assistance.
The wedding was beautiful and comical. Glenda was a beautiful bride and Lyn (Roosevelt Lyn Colvin) was a handsome groom. Glenda had her four sisters, Joyce, Jacki, Gissele, Linda, her niece, Tekoa, her first cousin Geynelle and her best friend Sarah in her wedding party. Her twin sister Linda was her matron of honor and Geynelle, who introduced her to Lyn, was her maid of honor.
Lyn had his brother Marcus as his best man, his younger brother and several friends were his groomsmen and ushers. Lyn's parents, Rev. Roosevelt and Mrs. Laverne Colvin as well as his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Henry were also in attendance.
Yes, Lyn married my girl and moved her away to Texas. My husband went along with them to help them drive the trailer. Glenda had accumulated quite a bit of furniture and had her own car. Lyn and Glenda flew my husband back home.
I was still back home recuperating. God has been good to me. He has blessed me and brought me from a mighty long way. All of which I give Him all the praise.
As I stated in my first book, "The Women with Undeveloped Character, Transforming My Life." It always takes me much longer to recuperate than most people. It's because God is continually transforming my life. He is causing His strength to become perfect in my weakness. (2nd Corinthians 12:9c).
After my surgery was over, my daughter Linda re-opened my day care center after a week. She didn't want me to lose my children for she knew it was my life. She helped me for a while and then left me alone with it. I was still short of breath and at times I would be completely out of breath after changing a baby's diaper.
I called my doctor and asked him if I could sign up for disability because I felt I couldn't handle the children any longer. He agreed to fill out the necessary papers and got me started.
Chapter Three
God Changed MY LifestyleGod stripped me of all of my idols. I was looking through a catalog one day and admiring how beautiful the dresses were. The Lord spoke to me and said that had to stop. I thought I had to walk in a room with a $300 dress on to be accepted as Mrs. James Dixon. That was one of my downfalls; I loved to shop! I was a shopaholic. He let me know that had to stop. I yielded it up to the Lord and said, "Not my will Lord, but thine be done." He had me take off my jewelry and let Him have it until He gave me permission to put it back on.
Chapter Four
Trying to Find My WayI went through a period where I was not permitted to see anyone except my husband. God wanted me to Himself. He had to talk to me and He wanted my undivided attention. This was thought to be strange to some, yet others prayed and God revealed to them that He was doing a work in my life and I couldn't be interrupted. This went on for a while. After some time, He would allow the children and grand children to come to see me and pray with me. But they could not stay for a long time.
Time went on and many things happened. I took a bed in the basement and that was my prayer room. Although I got to the point where I couldn't talk or walk, I could still continue communing in my Spirit. I kept the prayer wheel turning in my soul.
I remember praying to the Lord and telling Him I knew that He could heal me. He said, "Just trust me." Then He said, "Give me ten days with just water." My husband had a hard time trusting the Lord with me. He encouraged me to drink some juice so I trusted the Lord and on about the eighth or ninth day, I had some grape or carrot juice. My husband felt that he had to help God out. The Lord would start me over again at the first day. He said, "Give me 10 days with just water." I was able to do that. He would say, "Give me another 10 days with nothing but water." Of course I started dropping pounds. He had me fast for 40 days with nothing but water. Praise be to God I was not hungry and didn't have any pain at all. All I did was lay there and meditate day and night. If someone came into the room, I would get distracted. I was in the bed flat on my back for three months. I took care of all my personal needs myself. My husband would bring me a basin to get washed. He was a real good caregiver. He would check on me often; at times much too often for I needed privacy with the Lord. He gave me a cell phone to call him anytime day or night if I needed something.
I was dropping weight fast and was nothing but skin and bones. Many feared that I would die, but God told me to just trust Him. I questioned the Lord one day and asked Him when He was going to heal me. He asked me if I remembered the story of Lazarus and that my situation was similar to his. It was so that the Glory of God could be manifested.
My daughter Linda, who is a nurse practitioner, became angry because I wouldn't allow them to take me to the doctor. I had orders from the Lord to just trust Him and be true and see what He will do. He will never disappoint your soul. When you have done your best, let Jesus do the rest. Just keep your eyes upon the goal.
Chapter Five
Learning to Walk by FaithOn August 29th, 2001, the Lord woke me up singing this song to me
The Bond of Perfectness, an old Church of God hymn.- "How sweet this bond of perfectness, the wondrous love of Jesus! A pure foretaste of heaven's bliss, O fellowship so precious! O brethren, how this perfect love unites us all in Jesus! One Heart, and soul, and mind we prove the union heaven gave us."
God spoke to me and said, "Get up and walk." I said, "I can't walk." He repeated, "Get up and walk to the bathroom." I sat up in the bed still singing this song as loud as I could. The Spirit was all over me. I kept my hands in front of me balancing myself. There was a step to get into the bathroom. I stood there fearing I couldn't make it, but He said, "Go on." I picked up my foot and put it down on the step, went inside and took care of my business. Then I came out and sat in the chair by the door near the bathroom and passed out. I had stopped singing. When I realized it, I was hanging over the chair with my arms hanging down. The house phone was there on the desk so I called James on his cell phone and told him to come down. I didn't tell him where I was or what I'd done. He came down and looked in the bed and didn't see me so he called my name and looked and saw me sitting in the chair. I said to him, "Rejoice with me!" I got up and started to sing again, walking slowly with my arms stretched out for balance. James was amazed. He had a nice comfortable chair for me to sit in while he changed my bed linens. My daughter Linda was amazed that I was able to go to the bathroom normally and didn't get any bed sores. That's just like God. He took care of me all the while.
It took me a little while to regain my strength and to move into activities. I remained in the basement while continuing to rebuild my strength. I would get up and get something to eat. James had cooked food and placed it in the down stairs refrigerator and all I had to do was place it in the microwave, heat and eat.
God was pressing me to get some writing done. He gave me a charge to write twenty five poems in a certain length of time and I got it done. He was getting me ready to put my first book together. I couldn't write while anyone was present, for if they saw me writing, they might try to rush me to go upstairs and start with any regular routine as a housewife. But God was working hard on me preparing me for the burden He had put on my heart many years ago. God had my mind programmed for writing.
My weight had gone down to 120 pounds.
One Sunday I was up moving about and I started having chest pains. When James came home from church, I asked him to take me to the hospital because I was having a heart attack. He hesitated and then he tried to take me up the back steps. I asked him to call for an ambulance. He told me that I'd walked up the steps before. I told him that "I wasn't having chest pains at that time." I went and lay back in bed and the chest pain increased. He finally agreed to call the ambulance. As the EMT took my blood pressure and checked my oxygen levels, the ambulance driver began asking James questions, more of which he could not answer. They put me in the ambulance and started an IV. We were there in minutes.
They took me straight to a treatment room and started to work on me. First they put me on oxygen. Then they did some blood work and it showed that my enzymes were up very high. Even though no scars showed up on the other test, my cardiologist said that I'd had a small heart attack. She was pretty furious about all the weight I had lost. She said that I had been a big woman (200 pounds). She asked how I lost the weight. I told her that I had been fasting. She asked what I had been fasting for and I told her that it was for purification.
They treated me for several days and put me on a cardiac diet. The food didn't taste good, but I tolerated it. The nurses often came and took me for a walk around the hospital.
My son would come to sit and talk with me often during my stay in the hospital. I told him I would like to get up from my sick bed and reopen my daycare, cook and care for my husband and have a normal life again.
I was given a cat scan on my head and they found that I had a very small aneurism on my brain, but the doctor didn't think we needed to do anything about it because it was so small. The hospital discharged me with certain restrictions, special diet, home nurse, physical therapy and an aide. This lasted for about three weeks and then I was on my own again.
One day when my physical therapist was here, my son followed her all through the house questioning her concerning my being able to go out to Thanksgiving dinner at his house. She gave her approval providing I didn't stay too long and was not too active.
Chapter Six
Visitor PermittedOne day before I was delivered from the bed, my former pastor, Rev. Edward Cross, Sr. came over to work with James to plan the funeral of one of his members, Mother Annie L. Malone. She was our spiritual mother and had given us her power of attorney.
While Pastor Cross was here, he asked James to see if I would allow him to come down to see me. I agreed. He came down and we had a glorious time in the Lord; blessing and praising the Lord. Pastor Cross ministered to me and confirmed that I was in the place God wanted me to be. That was a time I will never forget.
James was a very good caregiver. He never missed a Sunday from church, but he always saw that I had all I needed before he left and after service was over, he headed straight home. As told to me by the other saints. They said that he would always say, "I have to get home to my wife." James was a devoted husband. We are the pastors at The Church of God Chapel in Delaware City.
We became pastors there when James was invited to conduct a service there. James brought the message and the congregation liked the message. After the service, they called a meeting and asked us if we would consider becoming their pastors. We prayed about it and told them that we would accept their offer. The church is on the grounds of the Governor Bacon Health Center. They also have a number of drug rehabilitation buildings.
We are mostly ministering to the people from the rehabilitation center located on the grounds near the church and a few other saints. We've seen members come and go but we are still there for the faithful few. But God is blessing in every service.
CH7[ Day care reopened
I called the Division of Social Service and requested an application to re-open my day care and it was sent to me. In the papers there was a form for me to get a physical from my doctor showing that I was capable enough to care for children again. My doctor filled out the paperwork. I also had to get some testing done on my electricity to show that it was working properly. I had to get a CPR and first aid card. I did just that.
They told me on the letter that I had to come into their office for a six hour orientation. I had to bring all my papers into the orientation with me. I was still a little weak but I made the six hours. I had also started to regain some weight. God blessed me to get my daycare started again. The word got out that I was going back into business.
