Filled with moving water and intuitive leaps, The Theory and Practice of Rivers is an elegy for Harrisons sixteen-year-old niece.
The Theory & Practice of Rivers by Jim Harrison returns to print as a celebratory, stand-alone volume in this new edition. In her heartfelt and powerful introduction, Rebecca Solnit calls this collection both elegy (inspired by the death of Harrisons sixteen-year-old niece) and loose memoir (filled with thoughts that leap intuitively across subjects, recalling myriad experiences, places, and encounters). We see the past made real as images of a handwritten draft of the title poem invoke Harrison on the page. As Outside magazine puts it, The Theory & Practice of Rivers is filled with moving water, the search for consolation and meaning in the sublime rightness of wild landscape. Anchored by a long poem sequence seated at its heart, this contemporary classic speaks to the rivers and cascades in all of us, the motion by which our lives are determined.

Acerca del autor
Jim Harrison (1937–2016) was the author of over three dozen books, including Legends of the Fall and Dalva, and served as the food columnist for the magazines Brick and Esquire. He published fourteen volumes of poetry, the final being Dead Man’s Float (2016). His work has been translated into two dozen languages and produced as four feature-length films. As a young poet he co-edited Sumac magazine with fellow poet Dan Gerber, and earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2007, he was elected into the Academy of American Arts and Letters. Regarding his most beloved art form, he wrote: “Poetry, at its best, is the language your soul would speak if you could teach your soul to speak.” Jim Harrison certainly spoke the language.
Rebecca Solnit’s nonfiction is capacious and innovative. She has received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lannan Literary Award, the Windham-Campbell Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Most known for Orwell’s Roses, A Paradise Built in Hell, and Recollections of My Nonexistence, Solnit travels widely, sharing her original blends of memoir, scholarship, geography, and criticism. Her voice is singular and polyphonic, with the logistical talents of a prose writer and the concision of a lyric poet. She is an intersectional feminist and supports diverse causes, having founded Not Too Late, a climate project. An advocate of public education, she attended the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, and has lived as a journalist, historian, activist, and independent writer since 1988. A contributing editor at Harper’s Magazine and a frequent writer for The Guardian and Literary Hub, she is based in San Francisco, California.

Descripción de la tienda
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
