Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of fire assaying, an ancient art with deep roots in the history of metallurgy. It offers a comprehensive and scientific explanation of the techniques used to extract and quantify precious metals from ores and other materials. The book goes beyond a mere collection of recipes, focusing instead on the underlying principles of chemistry and physics that govern each stage of the process. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding these principles, enabling the reader to adapt their approach to the unique characteristics of any particular ore. The book's exploration of fire assaying's place within the broader study of metallurgy, showcasing how this seemingly specialized practice reveals fundamental principles applicable to the field as a whole, makes it a valuable resource for students and experienced practitioners alike. Through a systematic approach, the book guides the reader through the various stages of fire assaying, from the selection and preparation of reagents to the intricate details of furnace operation and the analysis of results. The book's detailed explanations, combined with practical examples, make the complex world of fire assaying accessible to a wide audience. Its insights into the intricate workings of this traditional craft will be of great interest to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the science behind the ancient art of fire assaying. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book is the outgrowth of a set of mimeograph notes pre pared in 1911 and intended for use in the course in fire assaying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The mimeograph notes were succeeded by a book of 150 pages published by the author in 1915. The present volume has been revised and en larged and is offered as a small contribution toward the scientific explanation of the ancient art of fire assaying. It contains some hitherto unpublished results of research, as well as considerable new data derived from a careful search of all the available litera ture, none of which have previously appeared in book form.
Although intended primarily as a college textbook, it is not en tirely elementary in character and it is hoped that it will be found sufficiently complete and fundamental to be of service to the more mature student of the science. Every effort has been made to avoid the old cook-book method of presentation so common in books of this kind and to give the underlying scientific reasons for the many phenomena which occur, as well as the rationale of each process and detail of manipulation.
