Print on Demand. This book offers a deep exploration of the Ten Commandments, using the framework of a series of lectures delivered to the students of the University of Pennsylvania. The author delves into the historical context of the Commandments, tracing their origins to ancient Israel and their enduring presence in the Ark of the Covenant. He then examines the meaning of each commandment, exploring its significance both for the original Jewish audience and for contemporary readers. The book delves into the thematic depth of the Commandments, analyzing their prohibitive form and the way they incite a sense of conscience and awareness of sin. The author also explores the affirmative spirit that underlies the Commandments, viewing them as divinely covenantal rather than simply statutory. Finally, the book emphasizes the germ-like nature of the Commandments, arguing that they are fundamental principles of morality, applicable to all times and all people, even as other moral codes have come and gone. This book offers a rich and insightful exploration of the Ten Commandments, providing readers with a deeper understanding of their enduring relevance and power in shaping human morality. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

But although the Ten Commandments are rudi mental in their form, they are also elemental in their meaning, and therefore universal and immor tal in their application. Just because they are germs, they are capable of all growth, or unfolding along the lines suggested in the embryo. Men may outgrow, and have outgrown, other moralities for example, the Ritual of Moses, the Institutes of Manu, the Analects of Confucius, the zend-avesta of Zoroaster, the Ethics of Aristotle, the Koran of Mohammed, the Utilitarianism of Mill. But men have not outgrown, and never will outgrow, at least so long as this world stands, the Ten Command ments of Jehovah; for he has engraven them, not only on tablets of stone, but also on tablets of an essential, eternal morality. In brief, the Ten Commandments are the axioms of morals, the summary of ethics, the itinerary of mankind, the framework of society, the vertebral column of humanity.
