From the author's introduction: ".I must make it clear that I do not subscribe to all - or indeed to many - of the views put forward by the Fellows of St. Thomas's. I might go further and say that some of their opinions shock me very much. If I sometimes shudder at their suggestions of reform I am more often appalled at the ob- stinate and complacent conservatism of the majority of them. Nor do I think that some of the doctrines and some of the heresies which they propound are answered and contradicted with half the power which might have been employed to discredit them." Robinson in "The English University Novel": "It purports to be a series of conversations among the dons of 'St. Thomas's College' engaged in preparing a guide book which will enable them to interpret Oxford to some American visitors.
