Paperback. Taiwan Case Files - Volume IIIby Chang Li Yen In the humid summer of 1976 Taiwan, a patrol car rattles down a rural road toward an abandoned brick kiln. Inside a plaster-sealed wooden crate lies a woman's body-suffocated, entombed in cement, and left to rot in silence. For veteran inspector Chen Guochang, the discovery becomes the opening line of an investigation that will drag him through factory dormitories, corrupt warehouses, and the spiritual underbelly of a nation where the past never truly dies. The victim, Lin Xiuyue, is a migrant seamstress at Yongchang Textile-one of thousands of women who left home to sew the island's economic miracle. Her disappearance, dismissed by management, unravels a web of predation, poverty, and shame. As Chen follows the faint trail-an engraved fastener, footprints warped by mud, whispers of a missing ring-each clue pulls him deeper into a labyrinth of violence and superstition. When witnesses begin to collapse under visions of the dead and a suspect dies in terror, the boundary between forensic evidence and haunting dissolves. Chang Li Yen fuses investigative precision with literary dread, transforming real-world unsolved cases into a gothic anatomy of modern Taiwan. Drawing on his years as a crime reporter, he writes with the scalpel of journalism and the pulse of noir fiction, dissecting how guilt, power, and historical silence metastasize inside ordinary lives. Every chapter alternates between the rational and the uncanny: the coroner's report beside the ghost's testimony, the police archive beside the folklore that refuses erasure. Volume III expands the acclaimed Taiwan Case Files of Suspicion series beyond procedural mystery into moral autopsy. It explores the forgotten corners of Taiwan's industrial age-dormitories stacked with exhausted women, factories humming like mechanical hives, the ghosts born from unchecked ambition. Through Chen Guochang's weary eyes, readers witness a society negotiating between progress and conscience, faith and decay. The novel's meticulously researched realism anchors its supernatural terror, asking whether the true horror lies in the crime-or in the collective need to bury it. Written in stark, cinematic prose, Taiwan Case Files III reads like a reel of faded news footage revived in blood and moonlight. It is a requiem for the voiceless, a meditation on justice after truth has rotted away, and a confrontation with the question haunting every page of Chang Li Yen's work: When evidence ends, who will speak for the dead?
