The universe of pharmaceutical sales is very competitive regarding market share. This fourth book in the sequence TALES OF A DRUG REP personifies and exemplifies my intensity towards this profession. It is very important for all patients and their families to understand that all promotional prescription drugs are FDA approved. All of these prescriptions written by medical doctors and specialists possess patient benefits which have been proven via published phase III clinical trials, typically conducted by medical academic centers across the USA.
There are typically several drugs per indication from which a physician can select. With more than one drug to prescribe per indication, you can comprehend and appreciate why trained drug reps call on physicians to discuss the benefits of their drug portfolios. There are usually differences in drug efficacy trial end points regarding patient responses, especially subgroups of patients, and differences in reported adverse reactions that may help a physician recommend one drug over another drug option per patient. The drug’s dosage regimen (i.e. QD, BID, TID, QID, injection) will help decide which drug to select, along with size and shape of the tablet, capsule, or caplet.
Again, I would like to emphasize that patient care is not compromised by drug reps’ discussions with prescribers, traditionally known as drug details. On the contrary, a drug rep can remind physicians why his/her drug is the right selection for their patients, based on the physician goals, the patient age, co-existing conditions, and adverse events to potentially avoid. Drug reps provide or offer copies of published data as references to their claims to all of the physicians in their territories.
I would ask you to consider how many drugs are FDA approved per year while a community-based physician is practicing medicine. It is a plethora of drug data to comprehend and recall for a busy doctor with a large practice, especially after practicing for 25+ years. Drug reps can address questions and concerns, including patient assistance programs, samples, and patient educational materials. True, an academic physician such as a Professor of Medicine, Breast Medical Oncology, a subspecialist who has focused his/her career treating breast cancer, will be aware of new trials as they are presented at major annual conferences. In fact, they are typically invited as guest speakers to symposia to present recent study findings about the drugs they prescribe. Yet even these subspecialists may have a request regarding our promoted drugs which we can direct to the proper channels for response, for example, an educational slide deck?
Drug reps are on campus at academic centers and community medical buildings and hospitals to provide assistance to physicians along with their office and clinic staffs in the reps’ respective territories. This assistance pertains to pharmacists and their teams too.
Returning to the competitive drive it takes to be a successful pharmaceutical drug rep, this book is a pictorial history of trophies and accomplishments for which I was selected by the management teams during my career. The graphics are close to chronological order to help the reader conceptualize my time in this challenging and difficult profession, from 1980 through 2023.
This 4th edition in the sequence tales of a drug rep contrasts the first three books, which were primarily short stories describing my adventures in the territory. However, TALES OF A DRUG REP and TALES OF A DRUG REP III does include a number of photos to bring my career to life. In contrast, this final book is strictly a visual representation with table of content captions of my journey down drug rep aisle!!!
