Excerpt from A System of Practical Surgery, With Numerous Explanatory Plates, the Drawings After Nature, Vol. 1
In Holland, the same quackery predominated until the days of Tulpius, J. V. Horne, and Ruysch. In England the, College of Physicians was not founded until the reign of Henry VIII. In the beginnlng of the l6th century; but anatomy, which furnishes the only sound'principles of both medicine and surgery, was not taught until the 18th century. Prior to this, the bishop of London and the dean of St Paul's sold licenses and diplomas to the clergy, Iaity, and quacks, to practise physio 'and surgery. Bartholomew's Hospital was not erected until Henry's reign. Surgery was, then practised indiscriminately by barbers, farrie'rs, and sow-gelders. Both in Paris and London, in the 16th., and even the beginning of the 17th centuries, the barbers' and surgeons companies were incorporated. In 1676 vviseman redeemed surgery, by publishing the result of his valuable observations during the civil wars, in his' work, termed Several Chirurgical Treatises.
