Print on Demand. This book explores ingenious methods developed by the author to use direct and alternating currents simultaneously on a single wire, doubling its telegraphic service without compromising advantages of standard Morse operations. The text explores the need for such a system and traces its development from its inception, detailing the fundamental principles, instruments, and circuits used to separate and utilize the two currents. Beyond theory, the author provides measured readings taken under working conditions, offering practical insights into the system's operation in various conditions. The author advocates for the use of special wires for synchronizing purposes, describing one method of controlling synchronous motors and providing three methods for motors to operate in opposite directions on the same wire. The book concludes with descriptions of practical Morse systems operating by synchronous methods, showing how circuits operated over trunk lines may be distributed to different points. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Synchronous and Other Multiple Telegraphs offers practical methods for obtaining independent telegraph circuits on a single wire, with or without synchronism, and shows how to harness synchronized motion for reliable communications.
The book presents a clear, experiment‑based view of duplex, diplex, and multiplex arrangements, including direct and alternating current techniques, synchronous motors, and practical installations. It emphasizes hands‑on understanding from laboratory results and discusses how these ideas translate to real wires and stations.
- How to separate direct and alternating currents on the same line using condensers, inductances, and balancing devices.
- Methods to achieve synchronism at distant points and to control motors from a central station.
- Practical guidance for operating Morse systems and other telegraphs under synchronous schemes.
- Measured results, instrument considerations, and installation examples to help plan real‑world setups.
Ideal for readers seeking concrete, experiment‑based guidance on advanced telegraph systems and their practical applications.

Reseña del editor
The subjects included in this volume admit of a natural division into three Parts. The first Part is devoted to the general subject of methods of obtaining independent telegraph circuits by the use of direct and alternating currents on the same wire. This is the first technical description of these methods which has been published, and I have some satisfaction in making them public at the present time because the principles have been tested for a number of years under rather difficult service conditions.
The arrangements of circuits throughout the book are with almost no exceptions not merely theoretical results, but have been successfully operated either in the laboratory or under service conditions. The fact that these results, worked out in detail in the laboratory on artificial wires made to imitate real wires, have afterwards been applied to real wires with almost identical results serves to prove that good results in studying new systems of telegraphy may be obtained in the laboratory. The convenience of this mode of investigation is much greater than is attainable under the most favorable conditions with actual wires.
The nature of these subjects is such that investigation must almost of necessity be experimental rather than largely theoretical; for the number of conditions which must be fulfilled is very great, and to overlook one of them might be fatal to purely theoretical results. There is also a personal element which it is not possible to put into an equation.
The name of this work is perhaps only justified by reason of its brevity. It is evident that only certain phases of these extended subjects can be included in a volume of this size.
