Paperback. The warning arrives. You have eleven minutes, a house that was never built for this, and no idea which room is the safe one. Most disaster books tell you to store water and wait. This one hands you the protocols professionals actually run. When the grid drops and rescue is three days out, a household is living in the exact conditions military SERE training was built for: no infrastructure, no resupply, nobody coming. This book closes that gap. It merges U.S. military survival doctrine, FEMA and INSARAG standards, and professional swiftwater, avalanche, and wildland fire engineering into one field manual, written for the person holding it rather than for the rescue team that has not arrived.Twenty-three chapters. Eight environments. Every claim tied to a number, a published standard, or a documented event.Extreme heat. Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, work and rest cycling, acclimatization, and the daily hydration ceiling that stops water itself from killing you. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and why cooling comes before transport.Extreme cold, winter storms, avalanche. The C.O.L.D.E.R. principle, hypothermia staging, and the frostbite refreeze rule. Snow caves and quinzhees sized to hold radiant heat, and the ventilation that stops carbon monoxide killing you in your sleep. The fifteen-minute burial window, 457 kHz transceiver search, probe strikes, and V-conveyor extrication.Floods, flash floods, swiftwater, and tsunami. Why the vehicle is the trap and below grade is below survivable. Reading strainers and downstream Vs, low-head dams, the defensive swimming posture, throw bags and ferry angles, and the FEMA P-646 vertical evacuation math that decides which building you run to.Hurricanes and tornadoes. The square law and what wind actually does to a house. The load path, the garage door, and the window myth that will not die. FEMA P-361 and ICC 500 storm shelter and safe room standards, sited, sized, ventilated, and rated against a fifteen-pound missile at a hundred miles per hour.Wildfire and volcanic ash. Fire behavior, slope, the wind shift that kills, and reading the column. Houses are not burned down, they are ignited, and the home ignition zone is the whole argument. LCES escape routing. Then ashfall roof loading, lahars, respiratory protection, and keeping an engine running through ash.The aftermath. Urban search and rescue, collapse geometry, structural triage, INSARAG marking, and crush syndrome, the casualty you can kill by rescuing. Then oral rehydration, field sanitation, mold, and generator carbon monoxide, which is where the second mortality wave comes from.Does it cover my disaster? Heat waves, blizzards, avalanches, flash floods, swiftwater, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, megafires, volcanic ash, structural collapse, and post-disaster disease. Do I need to buy gear first? No. The mindset, communications, and planning chapters run on what is already in the house. Numbered protocols, hard checklists, sourced appendix. Before any of it, three chapters install the part most emergency preparedness books skip: the decision architecture that keeps a person functioning past 145 bpm, when fine motor control has gone and working memory has collapsed to two items.
