Paperback. October 1918. Deep in the tangled ravines of the Argonne Forest, 554 American soldiers followed their orders into German-held territory and watched the way back close behind them. For five days, Major Charles Whittlesey and his men, bakers, tailors, dock workers, and immigrants still learning English held a narrow pocket of French woodland against a professional enemy that surrounded them on every side. They had no food. No clean water. No reliable communication with the army behind them. Their own artillery shelled them for two days before a wounded carrier pigeon named Cher Ami delivered the message that stopped it. The Germans sent a formal written ultimatum. Whittlesey refused it. *SURROUNDED* is the definitive narrative account of the Lost Battalion's ordeal told through the voices of the men who endured it. Drawing on military records, survivor testimony, personal correspondence, and the accounts of German officers who faced these men across the wire, author Joseph C. Dempsey reconstructs not just what happened in that ravine, but what it cost the people who lived through it. This is a story about leadership without resources, courage without certainty, and the kind of stubborn human loyalty that no military doctrine can manufacture. It is also an honest account of what those five days did to the men who survived them: the nightmares, the broken marriages, the invisible wounds that followed them home long after the medals were pinned on. The Lost Battalion has been called legendary. This book returns them to what they actually were: ordinary people who discovered, under the worst possible conditions, exactly what they were made of. For readers of Band of Brothers, The Boys in the Boat, Unbroken, and All Quiet on the Western Front. This item is printed on demand.
