Paperback. "Sunlight and Song: A Singer's Life" is the illuminating autobiography of Maria Jeritza, one of the most celebrated and charismatic operatic sopranos of the early twentieth century. Known for her powerful voice and extraordinary dramatic presence, Jeritza provides a rare, firsthand account of her meteoric rise from the stages of Europe to the legendary Metropolitan Opera in New York.In this engaging memoir, Jeritza reflects on her artistic journey, sharing intimate details about her most famous roles, including her definitive interpretations in works by Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini. She offers readers a behind-the-scenes look at the rigorous demands of the operatic world, the complexities of vocal technique, and the personal discipline required to achieve international stardom. Beyond the technicalities of music, the narrative is filled with anecdotes involving the leading musical figures of her day, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the Viennese and American operatic scenes. This work serves as both a testament to a remarkable career and a valuable historical document for enthusiasts of classical music and vocal performance.
