Paperback. What if the world were made of words, and you had simply forgotten how to listen?Eight hundred years ago a man in Cairo believed exactly that. He believed the letters of the alphabet were living things, that the names of God carried distinct powers a person could learn to draw on, and that the universe had a hidden grammar anyone patient enough could learn to read. He spent his life mapping it.His name was Ahmad al-Buni, and the book he wrote became the most widely copied Arabic esoteric manuscript in history. Healers carried it across the Sahara by camel. Sufi masters studied it in Cairo. Orthodox clerics condemned it as heresy and tried to stamp it out. Eight centuries later it is still in print, still sold in markets from Marrakesh to Jakarta, still consulted by people who suspect he was onto something.Yet for most readers outside the Islamic world, his name means nothing at all.The Sun of Knowledge is a narrative retelling of al-Buni's life, thought and long afterlife, written for readers who have never opened a book on Islamic mysticism. It moves from the Algerian coast where he was born to the Cairo where he worked, through the science of letters and the theology of the divine names, into the fierce arguments his work provoked and the extraordinary journey it made across continents. What if the world were made of words, and you had simply forgotten how to listen?
Eight hundred years ago a man in Cairo believed exactly that. He believed the letters of the alphabet were living things, that the names of God carried distinct powers a person could learn to draw on, and that the universe had a hidden grammar anyone patient enough could learn to read. He spent his life mapping it.
His name was Ahmad al-Buni, and the book he wrote became the most widely copied Arabic esoteric manuscript in history. Healers carried it across the Sahara by camel. Sufi masters studied it in Cairo. Orthodox clerics condemned it as heresy and tried to stamp it out. Eight centuries later it is still in print, still sold in markets from Marrakesh to Jakarta, still consulted by people who suspect he was onto something.
Yet for most readers outside the Islamic world, his name means nothing at all.
The Sun of Knowledge is a narrative retelling of al-Buni's life, thought and long afterlife, written for readers who have never opened a book on Islamic mysticism. It moves from the Algerian coast where he was born to the Cairo where he worked, through the science of letters and the theology of the divine names, into the fierce arguments his work provoked and the extraordinary journey it made across continents. Every chapter closes with Reflections for the Modern Seeker, a short meditation connecting what you have just read to the life you are actually living.
- Understand why a thirteenth-century mystic's ideas about language still unsettle people who study meaning for a living
- See what eight centuries of practitioners have reported about sustained attention, and learn to hold that testimony honestly without swallowing it whole
- Find a diagnostic for your own hardest days that is older, stranger and more precise than anything self-help has offered you
- Recover a way of reading that treats a page as somewhere to stand rather than something to get through
- Discover why the words you choose, when you speak to the person in front of you, may matter more than you have been treating them as mattering
This is a book for anyone who has ever felt that we are drowning in language while starving for meaning, and wondered whether it was always this way.
It was not. Someone worked out something different, and wrote it down, and the book survived.
Open the first page. The sun has been up for eight hundred years.
