Print on Demand. This book analyzes the life and celebrated works of Jonathan Swift, tracing his rise from obscurity to his position as one of the most prominent literary figures of the 18th century. The author explores Swift's early life, his time spent with Sir William Temple, his forays into politics and social satire, and his eventual exile in Ireland. The book also delves into the complex relationship between Swift and Esther Johnson, known as Stella, and sheds light on the psychological and emotional turmoil that both inspired his greatest works and contributed to his later decline into misanthropy. Through a comprehensive examination of Swift's writings, including "A Tale of a Tub" and "Gulliver's Travels," the author examines the depth and range of Swift's satirical genius, his mastery of language and his profound insights into the human condition. Swift's work is positioned within the broader context of the Enlightenment, and the book explores how his ideas and writings both reflected and influenced the intellectual and social landscape of his time. Overall, the book provides a nuanced and thought-provoking analysis of one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in English literature, offering fresh perspectives on his life, work, and enduring legacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Last Sunday we met here to reflect on the work of Mahomet and the foundation and his tory of Islam. To-day - how vast a sense of humanity does it imply, to note the interval and contrast - we turn to judge Gambetta and the Republic in France. The few weeks have passed that Comte judged expedient as an in terval for the fair judgment of the dead; the flowers in the wreaths upon his grave are hardly withered, and how much has happened since his death! Within a month we see (as we could not see in the hour of his disappear ance) all that his death involved.
