At the beginning of the first century BC Athens was an independent city bound to Rome through a friendship alliance. By the end of the first century AD the city had been incorporated into the Roman province of Achaea. Along with Athenian independence perished the notion of Greek self-rule. The rest of Achaea was ruled by the governor of Macedonia already since 146 BC, but the numerous defections of Greek cities during the first century BC show that Roman rule was not yet viewed as inevitable. In spite of the definitive loss of self-rule this was not a period of decline. Attica and the Peloponnese were special regions because of their legacy as cultural and religious centres of the Mediterranean. Supported by this legacy communities and individuals engaged actively with the increasing presence of Roman rule and its representatives. The archaeological and epigraphic records attest to the continued economic vitality of the region: buildings, statues, and lavish tombs were still being constructed. There is hence need to counterbalance the traditional discourses of weakness on Roman Greece, and to highlight how acts of remembering were employed as resources in this complex political situation. The legacy of Greece defined Greek and Roman responses to the changing relationship. Both parties looked to the past in shaping their interactions, but how this was done varied widely. Sulla fashioned himself after the tyrant-slayers Harmodius and Aristogeiton, while Athenian ephebes evoked the sea-battles of the Persian Wars to fashion their valour. This interdisciplinary volume traces strategies of remembering in city building, funerary culture, festival and association, honorific practices, Greek literature, and political ideology. The variety of these strategies attests to the vitality of the region. In times of transition the past cannot be ignored: actors use what came before, in diverse and complex ways, in order to build the present. (Publisher's information).

Right of withdrawal

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day ¿on which you acquire, or a third party other
than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the goods.

of your decision to withdraw from this contract by an unequivocal statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax
or e-mail). To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning
your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we shall reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the
costs of delivery (with the exception of the supplementary costs resulting from your choice of a type of
delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us), without undue delay and in
any event not later than 14 days from the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw
from this contract. We will carry out such
reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have
expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement. We
may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of
having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or to our German delivery address, i.e. Scrinium
Classical Antiquity, p/a R. Hüning GmbH, Hemdener Weg 147, 46399 Bocholt, Germany without undue
delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal
from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has
expired.

You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the book(s), unless there has been a serious default in the
description of the books.

You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is
necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Efectos del desistimiento

El plazo se cumple si devuelve la mercancía antes de que venza el periodo de 14 días. Tendrá que asumir los gastos directos de devolución de los bienes. Usted solo es responsable de la disminución del valor de los bienes como resultado de una manipulación distinta a la necesaria para establecer la naturaleza, las características y el funcionamiento de los bienes.

Excepciones al derecho de desistimiento

El derecho de desistimiento no se aplica a lo siguiente:

We ship our books either by Dutch Post NL or by German Deutsche Post / DHL, depending the costs and / or the shipping time, or the value of the books in question. We attempt to handle orders as rapidly as possible, usually within 48 (working day) hours. When ordering books that are not in stock, customers are kindly requested to allow for a slight increase in delivery time. In such cases up-to-date shipping information will be regularly supplied to the customer by email. In the case of increased delivery time the customer will be under no obligation to go through with the purchase; the book will only be ordered with the consent of the customer. Consent being given, the customer cannot cancel his/her order. New books are partly in stock, partly to be ordered from publishers.
