Neeli's tale stands as the most renowned 'Yakshi Katha' in the vibrant folklore of Kerala, unfolding across two intriguing incarnations. In her first embodiment, she emerges as Lakshmi, the temple dancer, a 'Devadasi' devoted to Ammappan Kovil, the temple sanctuary nestled near Salem, Tamil Nadu.

Lakshmi's beguiling 'Lasya' dance, characterized by its slow, enchanting, and graceful movements, captivates the heart of Velavan, a 'Nambi' by caste. Enchanted by her artistry, he falls deeply in love. However, avarice consumes her mother, who deceitfully seizes his wealth and cruelly forbids any contact between him and her daughter.

In her relentless quest for Velavan, who has retreated into the unforgiving wilderness after losing his fortunes, Lakshmi meets a tragic end at his hands...

Reincarnated in her second life as the daughter of Chola King Chempian, she hunts down Velavan, reborn as Ananthan, a 'Vaniyan' by caste, seeking vengeance for his treachery in their prior existence...

Her wrath persists unabated until the entreaties of Avaya at Muppandal finally temper her fury. Embracing maturity and composure, she establishes her abode there as Muppandal Devi...

These captivating stories of the Goodspirits find their rightful place within the tapestry of 'Vill Pattu,' an esteemed branch of Thekkan Pattukal, the folk songs of southern Kerala.

'Vill Pattu' holds a cherished role in the ritualistic traditions of 'Amman Kovils'—the sacred Amman temples of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, deeply rooted in the venerable Dravidian culture that venerates Mother Goddesses. These devotional hymns, sung to the rhythmic cadence of the 'Villu,' an awe-inspiring giant bow-like musical instrument that may well be the world's longest, weave a spellbinding tapestry of worship and artistic expression.

Neeli's character has undergone diverse reinterpretations in various artistic forms, including drama and cinema. Many of these adaptations have deviated from the original narrative, portraying Neeli as a malevolent spirit, inflicting harm upon the innocent, tearing open their chests, and sating her thirst with their blood.

This book, designed for children, unveils the authentic essence of Neeli through striking graphic illustrations inspired by the mural art indigenous to Kerala, offering a true representation of this enigmatic figure.
