"The Story of Dentistry From the Dawn of Civilization to the Present" is a comprehensive and engaging narrative that traces the evolution of the dental profession from its primitive origins to the sophisticated practices of the early 20th century. M.D.K. Bremner provides a sweeping historical survey, examining how ancient civilizations-including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans-viewed and treated dental ailments through a mixture of superstition, early surgery, and herbal remedies.

The work chronicles the slow professionalization of dentistry, highlighting the shift from itinerant tooth-pullers to scientific practitioners. It details the significant technological and procedural breakthroughs that defined the field, such as the development of restorative materials, the introduction of anesthesia, and the establishment of formal dental education. By examining the social and scientific forces at play, Bremner illustrates how the preservation of oral health became a vital component of public medicine. This volume serves as an essential historical resource for dental professionals, historians of science, and readers interested in the long journey of human medical achievement.
