A man called Vale has brought "peace" - a wrist-band light that turns green for the compliant and red for everyone else, ration lines that ask for more than a signature, and a warmth on every screen that never quite blinks like a man should. Beneath a shuttered package store on Broad Street, a hidden church still gathers - Pastor Rodriguez, Sister Carmen, a dying woman's folded page of Scripture passed hand to hand - holding on to a promise the world outside has been told is a lie.Myrna's mother is still praying over the sink. Myrna's own light is green, and steady, and not entirely her own choosing anymore. The trumpet sounded. The dance floor at Kanos went quiet where Natalie and Eli used to stand. And Myrna — who heard the warnings, who kept saying later — is still here.
Hartford isn't the city it was. A man called Vale has brought "peace" — a wrist-band light that turns green for the compliant and red for everyone else, ration lines that ask for more than a signature, and a warmth on every screen that never quite blinks like a man should. Beneath a shuttered package store on Broad Street, a hidden church still gathers — Pastor Rodriguez, Sister Carmen, a dying woman's folded page of Scripture passed hand to hand — holding on to a promise the world outside has been told is a lie.
Myrna's mother is still praying over the sink. Myrna's own light is green, and steady, and not entirely her own choosing anymore. And every day the city inches toward a demand no green light can refuse: bow, or burn.
Those That Stayed Behind is the sequel to Lukewarm Girl's Last Chance — a novel of the seven-year Tribulation for readers who want their end-times fiction with teeth: the terror of being left behind, the cost of standing up when standing up gets you noticed, and the mercy that keeps showing up in a world built to erase it.
If you've ever said "later" to Jesus — this book is for you too.
