This statement was issued in the wake of the Syrian coup of 23 Feb 1966, which saw the Ba'ath Party's old guard represented by Michel Aflaq, Salah al-Din al-Bitar, and Munif al-Razzaz, deposed in a coup by younger factions led by Salah Jadid and Nureddin al-Atassi. Much of the old leadership fled to Baghdad, creating a schism between the Ba'ath Movement's Syrian and Iraqi branches. This document seeks to justify the coup, referring to Aflaq, Bitar, and Razzaz as Rightist infiltrators. Jadid and Atassi were in turn swept away when Defence Minister Hafez al Asad took control in 1970 as head of the Corrective Movement. N° de ref. del artículo 3638
