Print on Demand. This book explores the history of slavery, tracing its origins to the earliest days of human civilization. The author argues that slavery arose out of necessity, as a way to spare the lives of captives taken in war. Over time, slavery became a fundamental institution in many societies, with laws and regulations governing the treatment of slaves. The book examines slavery in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages, as well as its prevalence in the United States and other parts of the world. The author also discusses the moral and ethical questions surrounding slavery, and the arguments for and against its abolition. This thought-provoking book offers a comprehensive overview of a complex and controversial topic, shedding light on its historical, social, and philosophical implications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
From ancient Egypt to the legal codes of Greece and Rome, this book collects analysis and data to trace how slavery emerged, was sustained, and transformed over time. It also surveys how early religious and civil systems dealt with master–slave relations, and how these ideas evolved through the middle ages into modern debates. The work aims for a practical, fact-focused account rather than polemics, offering readers a clear view of the institution’s history and its social impact.
What you will learn includes a broad sweep of topics—from the origins of slavery as a social and legal system to its treatment in Hebrew, Greek, and Roman contexts; from Christian and medieval perspectives to the modern questions of abolition and national policy. The book also analyzes how laws, customs, and economic forces shaped the lives of enslaved people and their masters across different eras and regions.
- How slavery began and why it persisted in early societies
- Key differences among Hebrew, Greek, and Roman slavery and their legal bases
- Influences of Christian teachings and medieval law on the practice
- Arguments surrounding abolition and the moral, political, and legal debates
Ideal for readers of history, law, and social studies who want a clear, source-based overview of slavery’s origins and evolution.

Reseña del editor
IT is essentially the highest genius of the statesman and political philosopher to place human institutions and human progress upon their true foundation. Government, laws, and the organic principles of society owe their perpetuity and ad vancement to the true theory of their existence. History is his only measure of human experience; and the experience of the past can alone light the dark pathway of the future. The smoke and din of turmoil and commotion may for a while over shadow its radiance, but to the undeviating eye of philosophy and truth, it gradually reveals its twilight beams far in the dim distance, and they brighten upon his view like constellations in the celestial fields upon the steadfast gaze Of the astronomer. The eye of the true statesman and political philosopher is the eye of faith; it pierces the dim war-clouds Of contending factions, penetrating into regions of pure truth, into higher and more ample fields of being, and then basks in balmy daylight as calm and peaceful as summer sunshine, after the angry thunder-storm has spent its fury and passed away. The theory of the South has seldom yet been founded in truth, nor the philosophy of her institutions put upon its true ground.
