The words go first. The song stays.
Anyone who has sung with an older person knows the small miracle: someone who struggles to find the words of the day begins, all the same, the second verse of a song from when they were young. This book was made for that moment.
Songs of a Lifetime gathers 64 beloved old songs, all with the complete words and in large print, so an older reader can follow each line with a finger while singing. No abbreviations and no “repeat chorus”: when the chorus returns, it is printed again in full.
Inside the book you will find:
- Songs of courting and home: Daisy Bell, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, After the Ball
- Songs of home and far away: Danny Boy, Loch Lomond, Home on the Range, Molly Malone, Waltzing Matilda
- Songs to make you smile: It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, Bill Bailey, Polly Wolly Doodle
- Songs for little ones, perfect for singing with children and grandchildren
- Christmas and New Year favourites: Silent Night, Jingle Bells, Auld Lang Syne
- Hymns and spirituals of faith and comfort: Amazing Grace, Abide with Me, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
Every song includes a warm two-line introduction explaining who wrote it, when it appeared, and how it was traditionally sung.
A gentle opening guide offers practical suggestions for singing with someone with dementia: start the verse and wait, never quiz or correct, and remember that one song may be enough. A final section invites families to write down the songs that belong to their own story.
The 64 songs were published before 1930 and are presented as public-domain works, drawn from English-language traditions across the United States, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.
Ideal for:
- Families who want to sing with parents and grandparents
- Caregivers looking for a simple shared activity
- Care homes, day centres, memory groups, and activity coordinators
- Grandparents who want to sing familiar songs with grandchildren
- A meaningful gift for someone who has always loved to sing
A book for families, caregivers, activity coordinators, and choirs of two — because houses sound better with singing in them.
