Paperback. 1986 Los Angeles. Abbey Rhodes knows horror movies better than she knows how to sleep.By day, she is a film student fighting to be taken seriously in a world of men who call their cruelty art. By night, she works behind the counter at After Midnight Video, a dying Hollywood rental store with a locked private cabinet full of bootlegs, banned imports, and tapes that do not officially exist. Then Julian Ashcroft walks into the horror aisle.Elegant, dangerous, and far too interested in what Abbey sees, Julian is a collector of rare films and worse things. When an unlabeled cassette appears in the return bin, Abbey finds twenty-three seconds of footage: a hallway, a woman's laugh, and one word on the screen.THURSDAY.The tape leads Abbey to Lena Hart, a missing actress whose face is still taped to payphones across Hollywood. It also leads to a private circle of powerful men who turn women into footage, evidence into property, and silence into art.As Abbey follows the trail from video-store shelves to screening rooms, pool houses, police files, and burning theaters, she is forced to ask whether Julian is helping her expose the truth-or using her curiosity to finish a story he was too guilty to end himself. Some films want an audience. Some evidence wants witnesses. And some monsters only become visible when the camera keeps rolling.Soft Focus, Sharp Teeth is a VHS-era psychological thriller with dark romantic obsession, horror-noir atmosphere, corrupt-police conspiracy, and a heroine determined to take back the frame. 1986 Los Angeles. Abbey Rhodes knows horror movies better than she knows how to sleep.
By day, she is a film student fighting to be taken seriously in a world of men who call their cruelty art. By night, she works behind the counter at After Midnight Video, a dying Hollywood rental store with a locked private cabinet full of bootlegs, banned imports, and tapes that do not officially exist.
Then Julian Ashcroft walks into the horror aisle.
Elegant, dangerous, and far too interested in what Abbey sees, Julian is a collector of rare films and worse things. When an unlabeled cassette appears in the return bin, Abbey finds twenty-three seconds of footage: a hallway, a woman’s laugh, and one word on the screen.
THURSDAY.
The tape leads Abbey to Lena Hart, a missing actress whose face is still taped to payphones across Hollywood. It also leads to a private circle of powerful men who turn women into footage, evidence into property, and silence into art.
As Abbey follows the trail from video-store shelves to screening rooms, pool houses, police files, and burning theaters, she is forced to ask whether Julian is helping her expose the truth—or using her curiosity to finish a story he was too guilty to end himself.
Some films want an audience.
Some evidence wants witnesses.
And some monsters only become visible when the camera keeps rolling.
Soft Focus, Sharp Teeth is a VHS-era psychological thriller with dark romantic obsession, horror-noir atmosphere, corrupt-police conspiracy, and a heroine determined to take back the frame.
