The Kuzuryū Valley, in the old Province of Echigo. 1578 and 2026. A promise that four centuries could not keep silent.
A wooden cross, warm to the touch. A red petal beneath the left ear. A promise whispered in a forgotten winter. And the four centuries it took to keep it.
In the last years of the Sengoku era, Dario, a mercenary who has crossed half the world in search of a war worth dying in, is captured by the Himuro clan of Echigo Province. He should be executed. Instead, Princess Himuro spares him. What begins as a debt of blood becomes something neither of them knows how to name. Then treachery brings down the walls of Kasugayama, and a mountain cave is sealed behind them with cherry petals scattered upon the snow.
Four centuries later, the Virtus Group of Milan, led by its young CEO Dario Valli, pursues an impossible Japanese contract: a hydroelectric dam in the mountains of Niigata. On the far side of a high-resolution screen, the CEO of the Himuro holding does not know why she trusts this stranger with the deal that could destroy her clan. Dario Valli does not know why the valley feels familiar. Neither of them knows that a small wooden cross has been waiting under a plum tree for four hundred years, still warm.
The Snow Oath is a dual-timeline historical fantasy of love, memory and betrayal: where the flower that does not die blooms in the snow.
For readers of:
Shōgun by James Clavell, Silence by Shūsaku Endō, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, and the historical fiction of Kate Morton and Susanna Kearsley.
About the setting
Grounded in careful research into the Sengoku period, the tradition of the kakure kirishitan (the hidden Christians of Japan) and the aesthetics of mono no aware: the beauty of things that pass.
