Your team is not using AI the way you are. That is the whole problem.
You have used these tools. They work. They give you back the better part of a day every week — and they have changed almost nothing about how your company actually runs.
That is not a training gap, and it is not a budget problem. The median small business spends about $30 a month on AI.
Here are the numbers that explain it. Managers get 7.2 hours a week back from AI. Everyone else gets 3.4. Seventy-six percent of small businesses use AI — and fourteen percent have it embedded in how the work actually gets done.
Sixty-two points of daylight. Closing that gap is what this book is for.
A method, not a tour of the tools
S.C.A.L.E. is five steps you can run in ninety days.
- SELECT — Score every repeated process on frequency, judgment, cost of error, and whether one named person owns it. Take three. Start with the boring one.
- CODIFY — Sit with the person who does the work and fill six boxes. The decisions box is the whole game. You cannot automate what you cannot describe.
- ASSIGN — Take the steps apart individually. Human only, AI drafts and a human approves, or AI runs and a human audits. Every AI step gets one named owner.
- LAUNCH — Decide where the saved time goes before you free it, and say so out loud. Predict the first bad week. Give it to the pragmatic skeptic, not the enthusiast.
- EVALUATE — Four numbers: before, after, rework, error rate. Roughly forty percent of AI's time savings are eaten by rework nobody measures. On the date you set, say keep, fix, or kill.
