This new guide employs Skillstreaming’s evidence-based four-part training approach―modeling, role-playing, performance feedback, and generalization―to teach prosocial skills in a small-group context. The book includes a total of 80 skills specifically tailored to the needs of learners with high-functioning autism and related disorders.

The introduction offers a framework for understanding high-functioning autism disorders, defines unique characteristics of this population, and emphasizes the role of individualized coaching and the assistance of supportive peers in helping these learners meet their unique challenges. The remainder of the book presents skills and related materials.

Each skill includes an outline for group leaders with helpful advice for teaching specific skill steps and a listing of appropriate role-play situations. Two reproducible homework reports are provided for each skill. Appendixes provide skill checklists and other evaluation forms, as well as dialogue from two sample Skillstreaming sessions. A CD with printable forms accompanies the book.
NOTE: It is essential for successful implementation of this curriculum to first have the program book (Skillstreaming Children and Youth with High-Functioning Autism: A Guide for Teaching Prosocial Skills) before attempting to utilize other Skillstreaming products.

Dr Ellen McGinnisEllen McGinnis, PhD, holds degrees in elementary education, special education, and school administration. She has taught elementary and secondary students in the public schools and has served as special education consultant in both public and hospital schools, school principal, special education director, and executive director of student support services. Dr. McGinnis recently retired as the mental health and dispute resolution consultant from the Iowa Department of Education and now works as an author and private consultant. The author of numerous articles on identifying and teaching youth with emotional/behavioral disorders, she collaborated with Dr. Arnold P. Goldstein on early Skillstreaming books and is author of the most recently released editions Skillstreaming in Early Childhood, Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child, and Skillstreaming the Adolescent.

Dr Richard L. Simpson, EdD, is professor emeritus at the University of Kansas, USA. He has directed numerous demonstration programs for the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Medical Center for students with autism spectrum disorders and has coordinated a variety of federal grants related to students with disabilities. He has also worked as a special education teacher, school psychologist, and coordinator of a community mental health outreach program. He has authored numerous books, articles, and tests on a variety of topics related to students with disabilities. Dr. Simpson is the former senior editor of the professional journal Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities.
