Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating look into the life and times of Sir Walter Raleigh, a pivotal figure in Elizabethan England. The author delves into the complex character of Raleigh, highlighting his adventurous spirit, his service in the French Huguenot wars, his military exploits in Ireland during the turbulent Desmond rebellion, and his subsequent rise to prominence at the English court. The book places Raleigh's experiences within the broader historical context of the Reformation, the burgeoning English sea power, and the volatile political landscape of the time. It examines the influences that shaped Raleigh's worldview, including the writings of Machiavelli and Castiglione, and explores his intricate relationships with key figures like Queen Elizabeth, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, and Robert Cecil. The book delves into the ethical dilemmas posed by the brutal realities of the era, particularly through the lens of Raleigh's participation in the massacre at Smerwick. The author carefully weighs the historical context against Raleigh's personal actions, offering a nuanced and thought-provoking assessment of his moral compass. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling portrait of a man caught between the grand ambitions of his age and the often unforgiving realities of a world rife with religious and political conflict. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Modern History of UK and Ireland
Even as to the place of his birth there has not been complete unanimity. One writer at least has claimed that honour for an old house in the neighbourhood of the palace at Exeter, while others have accorded it to the hereditary manor of Fardell, which is near Ivy bridge, on the edge of Dartmoor. The question, how ever, appears to be decided beyond dispute in favour of East Budleigh by a letter from Sir Walter himself to a Mr. Richard Duke, of Otterton, the owner of the farm of Hayes, where it was long kept and shown to visitors. In this letter, which has now disappeared, but which was duly transcribed by Aubrey, he endeavoured to persuade Mr. Duke to allow him to purchase the farm which had been for many years occupied by his family, adding for the natural disposition I have to that place, being borne in that house, I had rather seat myself there than anywhere else. The actual name Hayes does not occur in the letter, but there is no room for doubt that Sir Walter referred to the estate of which his father held a lease from the Dukes. The old Tudor farm-house of Hayes, or Hayes Barton, still retains its sixteenth century character. It is situated between the Otter and the Exe, about a mile from the church of East Budleigh, some six from Exmouth and three from the little port of Budleigh Salterton, from which it is separated by a wood of oak-trees.
