ABOUT: On the Other Side: 23 Days with the Viet Cong is Kate Webb’s first‑person account of being captured in Cambodia in 1971 and surviving 23 days of forced marches, interrogations, illness, hunger, and constant fear—while also observing moments of discipline, humanity, and unexpected rapport among her captors. It is both a survival narrative and a rare, ground‑level portrait of Viet Cong and Cambodian communist forces during the Vietnam War. Webb, a 28‑year‑old UPI correspondent, was reporting near Highway Four in Cambodia when she and several other journalists were captured by Cambodian Liberation Armed Forces (closely aligned with the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese). Their shoes were removed, their arms bound, and they were forced to carry branches as camouflage while being marched deeper into the jungle. Over the next three weeks, Webb endured: Forced marches through dense jungle while hiding from U.S. bombers. Infection and injury, including severe foot wounds crudely stitched by a soldier. Hunger and thirst, receiving only the same sparse rations as their captors. Interrogations, including pressure to write statements about American atrocities—statements she feared would be broadcast by Radio Hanoi. Constant fear of execution, especially during moments when guards grew tense or when airstrikes passed overhead. Despite the harsh conditions, Webb also observed unexpected discipline and restraint among the soldiers. She reports no sexual harassment, noting instead an “incredible discipline” that surprised her.
