Seneca's On the Shortness of Life and 27 essential Stoic letters, in one annotated edition for modern readers.
You do not have too little time. You waste too much of it. That is the argument Seneca made nearly two thousand years ago, and it lands harder today than it did in Rome. On the Shortness of Life is one of the most direct books ever written on time, focus, and attention, and the clearest starting point for anyone new to Stoicism.
This TIL Classics edition pairs the complete essay with 27 carefully chosen Moral Letters to Lucilius, the letters where Seneca teaches Stoic philosophy as a daily practice: how to protect your time, master fear and anger, face setbacks, handle wealth and loss, choose your company, and meet death without dread.
What makes this annotated edition different:
- The complete text of On the Shortness of Life (De Brevitate Vitae), translated by Aubrey Stewart
- 27 selected Moral Letters to Lucilius (Epistulae Morales), translated by Richard M. Gummere
- A "Modern Context" commentary after every chapter and letter, connecting Seneca's ideas to work, leadership, and life today
- "Think It Through" questions for reflection, journaling, book clubs, and classroom discussion
- A reading map that shows you where to start
- An introduction to Seneca's life, his exile, and Rome under Nero
- Edited and annotated by M.A. Aponte, author of The Logical Mind
