Carleton County's story blends education, industry, and community into New Brunswick's history.
This edition traces how local schools and parish trustees shaped early learning, from free tuition to rural school duties and the chance for students to document their own past. It also looks at how the region’s leaders and magistrates managed public life, education, and local governance in a time of change.
Readers will also see the county’s growth in industry and travel, from lumber and farming to the arrival of steam and the first rail lines. The text highlights agricultural societies, libraries, and a developing town life in Woodstock, along with the shifting borders that once divided neighboring lands.
- How early education was funded and organized, and what that meant for families.
- The role of local magistrates in shaping schools and parishes.
- Stories of industry, transportation, and civic institutions that fueled growth.
- Regional context, including boundary issues and community development in Woodstock and surrounding areas.
Ideal for readers of Canadian regional history who want a grounded look at how a single county helped shape a province.

Reseña del editor
Page Fivereader their lies a well of knowledge on the subject in the fascinating writ ings of Francis Parkman. In this brief and running sketch, one can only pause to remark that the impress of French civilization has been left on the physical outline of the country, not alone, in the name of the great river which flows through its midst, originally Riviere S. Jean, but also in the smaller streams which still carry the names of Presqu'ile and (riviere) or River des Chutes. It is to be hoped that these designations will be allowed to remain and that, in an iconoclastic age, they will not be obliterated to make room for memorials to plutocratic magnates, who would otherwise soon be forgotten. Two names, indeed, there are that might well be ap plied to future settlements or locations, suggested by mention of Archdeacon W. 0. Raymond and Dr. W. F Ganong, since by their research and writings they have contributed invaluable material dealing with the history of this part of the province.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
