[From front jacket flap] The Ship's Compass is written primarily for students preparing for Ministry of Transport examinations for Certificates of Competency as First Mate, Master, Extra Master, and Compass Adjuster. It should also prove useful to candidates preparing for examinations for all grades of Civil Air Navigators' licences. Aircraft compasses are not dealt with, but the principles and theory of the subject are the same for aircraft and ships. Navigating officers in ships of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force will likewise find the book useful. Candidates for most of the examinations must pass in practical and oral tests, and in a written paper. It includes all the magneto-statics to Extra Master standard, a full description of terrestrial magnetism and the magnetism of a ship. The causes of compass deviation are analysed, and the methods of correction are carefully explained. The book contains 19 half-tone illustrations of modern marine compass equipment and accessories, 39 diagrams in colour, 109 line drawings and 4 chartlets. The majority of the diagrams have been prepared by the authors to provide an illustration wherever it was considered desirable. Calculations worked in detail number 77, several with an alternative solution, and 262 questions for exercise are given together with the answers. These calculations provide candidates with comprehensive material of the kind likely to be met with in the various examinations. A mathematical treatment of the forces causing deviation at a compass together with other necessary proofs is given in an Appendix. The Sperry and Brown gyro compasses are described with particular reference to the methods used to eliminate errors. A comprehensive index is included. N° de ref. del artículo 20171107004
