Shinto, the native religious tradition of Japan, is best understood through experience. This book guides you around six Shinto sacred spaces (jinja) in Tokyo (Asakusa Jinja, Yushima Tenmangū, Kanda Jinja, Kon’nō Hachimangū, Shibuya Hikawa Jinja, and Meiji Jingū). It introduces the history and practices of this tradition, drawing on features of each of the locations you visit. A section on appropriate etiquette helps you to act appropriately, and even practise Shinto during your visits.

See beyond the buildings, and experience Shinto as a living Japanese tradition.

David Chart is a naturalised citizen of Japan, and a practitioner of Shinto. He works for Jinja Honchō, the largest Shinto organisation, but this book is an independent effort.
