James Grieve's acclaimed translation of "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower" has introduced a new century of English-language readers to the riches of Marcel Proust. As the 2nd vol. in the superb Allen Lane-Viking Press edition of "In Search of Lost Time"--the first completely new translation of Proust's novel since the 1920s--it brings a more comic & lucid prose than English readers have previously enjoyed. "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower" is Proust's spectacular dissection of male & female adolescence, charged w/ the narrator's memories of Paris & the Normandy seaside. At the heart of the story lies his relationships w/ his grandmother & w/ the Swann family. As a meditation of the different forms of love, "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower" has no equal. Here, Proust introduces some of his greatest comic inventions, from the magnificently dull M. de Norpois to the enchanting Robert de Saint-Loup. It is memorable as well for the first appearance of the two figures who for better or for worse are to dominate the narrator's life--the Baron de Charlus & the mysterious Albertine. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "The latest Penguin Proust is a triumph, & will bring this inexhaustible artwork to new audiences throughout the English-speaking world." -Malcolm Bowie, Sunday Telegraph (London). "James Grieve poignantly captures the sense of loss, of bereavement which informs the novel as a whole." -Frank Wynne, Irish Times. "The new Penguin Proust offers English readers a stylistic experience that is a far better equivalent of the original than what they have had till now." -Robert Alter, TLS. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: MARCEL PROUST was born in Auteil in 1871. In his 20s, following a year in the army, he became a conspicuous society figure, frequenting the most fashionable Paris salons of the day. After 1899, however, his chronic asthma, the death of his parents, & his growing disillusionment w/ humanity caused him to lead an increasingly retired life. From 1907 on, he rarely emerged from a cork-lined room in his apartment on boulevard Haussmann. There he insulted himself against the distractions of city life & the effects of trees & flowers--though he loved them, they brought on his attacks of asthma. He slept by day & worked by night, writing letters & devoting himself to the completion of "In Search of Lost Time." He died in 1922. * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: JAMES GRIEVE is sometimes Reader in French a the Australian National University. He has published a translation of the first part of Proust's work ("Swann's Way", 1982) & 2 novels for young adults, "A Season of Grannies" (1987) & "They're Only Human (2001). * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & to international destinations via efficient USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL at our below-cost rates quoted upon request.…
