The famous Royal Porcelain factory of France which was established at Sèvres nar Vesailles in 1736, had been started as a private entreprise at Vincennes some sixteen years earlier. The outstanding success of the porcelain produced by this factory was largely due to an unusually happy association of artists, craftsmen and chemists working under efficient administrators and guided by artistic advisors of particular excellence. The Sévres porcelain at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire, forms part of the remarkale collection of waorks of art which, with the house, was bequethed by Mr. James A. de Rothschild to the National Trust in 1957.
