Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricacies of verb tense usage in one of Caesar's most famous works, The Gallic War. The author examines the nuances of the indicative and subjunctive moods, providing a thorough analysis of their interplay. By comparing the two, the book uncovers patterns and exceptions to the traditional rules of sequence, offering new insights into the complex relationship between tense and meaning. Through detailed examples, the author demonstrates how Caesar used these tenses to convey precise temporal relationships and convey shades of meaning. This in-depth exploration enhances our understanding of Caesar's writing style and enriches our appreciation of the subtleties of Latin grammar, shedding light on the complexities of language and communication in ancient Rome. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

In its boldest and baldest form the rule of the sequence' im ply says that in subjunctive subordinate clauses primary tenses 0 low primary and secondary follow secondary, leaving a natural impression that the tenses of the subjunctive are meaningless and depend only formally on the tense of the main verb. This form of the doctrine is the one which Professor Hale. Set out to attack espe cially. It is safe to say that no one now advocates such a doctrine. Every one admits that the tenses of the subjunctive have some meaning, though there might be a difference of opinion as to the amount and kind of this It is an undoubted fact that the tenses of the subjunctive do follow this rule in the great major ity of cases. No One is prepared to say how far this is due to the logical relation of ideas in the sentence, as expressed by tense, and how far it is due to a mechanical blurring of these relationships by a formal sequence of tense. This is the question to the solution of which this paper is intended to contribute.
