The book frames Seneca’s essays in plain language, exploring topics like liberty, contemplation, and the role of philosophy in public life. It argues for careful reading, careful writing, and a balanced approach to fame, fortune, and private happiness. This edition adds a reflective after-thought that explains the value of paraphrase as a tool for understanding human nature and moral guidance.
- Clear, accessible restatements of classic Stoic ideas.
- Discussions on leisure, public life, and personal retreat.
- A practical look at how philosophy can guide daily decisions.
- Thoughtful notes on how paraphrase can illuminate the original text.
Ideal for readers of philosophy and moral philosophy who want a practical, modern take on ancient wisdom.

Reseña del editor
The reader will, in some measure, be able to judge by this taste what he is farther to expect; that is to say, as to the cast of my design, and the simplicity of the style and dress; for that will still be the same, only accompanied with variety of matter. Whether it pleases the world or no, the care is taken; and yet I could wish that it might be as delightful to others upon the perusal as it has been to me in the speculation. Next to the gospel itself, I do look upon it as the most sovereign te medy against the miseries of human nature: and I have ever found it so, in all the injuries and distresses of an unfortunate life. You may read more of him, if you please, 1n the Appen dix, which I have here subjoined to this Preface, concerning the authority of his writings, and the circumstances of his life, as I have extracted them out of Lipsius.

Descripción de la tienda
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
