"Selected Works of Richard Rolle: Hermit" offers a profound collection of the writings of one of England's most influential 14th-century mystics. Known as the Hermit of Hampole, Richard Rolle's work represents a pivotal moment in the development of English spiritual literature. This collection captures the essence of his intense, personal devotion and his unique focus on the sensory experiences of divine love-often described as heat, sweetness, and song.

The selection highlights Rolle's transition from Latin scholarship to the use of the vernacular, making complex theological concepts accessible to a wider medieval audience. Through his lyrical prose and passionate exhortations, readers explore the solitary life of a hermit dedicated to the direct, unmediated contemplation of God. His influence on later Middle English writers and the broader Western mystical tradition is immense. This work serves as both a historical window into medieval piety and a timeless guide for those interested in the history of Christian thought and the pursuit of spiritual ecstasy. These selected works remain an essential resource for scholars of medieval studies and practitioners of the contemplative life alike.
