Descripción del artículo del vendedor

An pleasing Shrewsbury printing of Oliver Mathews"s 1616 chronicle of Salop, regarded as the earliest history of the town, in a smart quarter calf binding by Delrue. In a smart later quarter calf binding with marbled paper boards, bound by Delrue, with the original wraps bound in. The 1877 Shrewsbury reprint of Mathews"s 1616 antiquarian text, reproduced from the transcription first printed by Thomas Hearne in 1722. A curious early history of Shrewsbury, tracing the legendary foundation and ancient names of the town through British, Roman, Saxon and medieval history. Oliver Mathews (c.1520-c.1618) was a Welsh apothecary, burgess of Shrewsbury and chronicler. He is credited with writing the first history of Shrewsbury, though at times the author's accuracy has been contested, with Hugh Owen and John Brickdale Blakeway noting "strange and unauthorised assertions," made by Mathews. Printed on the recto only throughout, with versos blank. An appealing local-history edition of one of the earliest accounts of Shrewsbury. In a later quarter calf binding with marbled paper boards, bound by Delrue, with the original wraps bound in.Externally, lovely. Very slight shelf wear to extremities. Light soiling and scattered spotting original paper wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Light scattered spotting to first and last few leaves and fore edge with one or two minor handling marks. Printed to the recto only. Leaves frequently remain partially uncut to the fore edge.
