This book is about how to spend well. Not less. Which conversions of money into life reliably work, which reliably do not, how large the difference is, and why the gap between a well-aimed budget and a badly aimed one of identical size is larger than the gap produced by a substantial pay rise.
It is built from evidence rather than conviction. Where researchers have measured something — what a returned hour is worth, how fast a purchase fades, whether a bigger house raises wellbeing, what a commute actually costs — the measurement is here with the size of the effect. Where the popular version of a finding is larger than the finding, the text says so. Where a result has a mixed replication record, the chapter states it in the text rather than burying it in a note. And every recommendation is followed by the arithmetic that sizes it, so you can rank them rather than agree with them.
The one idea the book turns on
A purchase is noticed for exactly as long as it keeps producing change. That converts an unanswerable question — will this make me happier — into an answerable one: is this a level or a recurrence? A better version of something you own is a level, and levels are noticed for two to eight weeks. The retention period of almost any purchase can be known before the money is spent.

• Part I — what money actually buys. The income-and-wellbeing research including the 2023 reconciliation almost nobody reports; why the fourth week feels like the first; and the one category of spending whose aggregate return is mathematically zero.
• Part II — the four conversions. Time returned, experience anticipated and retold, other people, and capability and health — what each is worth, what the objections are, and how to rank them against each other.
• Part III — why we spend badly. Four mechanisms that operate below the level of decision: payment that does not hurt, accounts that exist only in the mind, a price that is not the cost, and spending nobody chose.
• Part IV — the big four. Housing, transport, the everyday, and the cost of raising and caring for people — the categories that dominate a lifetime's outlay and receive almost none of the advice, with the arithmetic printed rather than implied.
• Part V — spending well. How to decide without spending a month on it; the problem nobody warns about, which is that forty years of successful saving makes spending the money afterwards nearly impossible; and what it means to want what is worth wanting.

We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
Our team will provide full instructions on how to return your order and once received our returns department will process your refund.

Efectos del desistimiento
