First published in 1997. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

..".I would recommend it to anyone who is concerned about the education of American children. It should appeal to child psychiatrists who consult with community agencies and gives a good argument for all concerned parties to become involved at the policymaking level." --Kaye McGinty, MD, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry "The editors have compiled an effectively organized, engaging, and useful source of empirically grounded intervention strategies on student, school, and system levels....The in-depth, practical prevention and intervention strategies, range from specific teacher and classroom tactics to community-based programs. This constitutes an essential reference tool for every school psychologist, administrator, teacher, and member of an educational support team." --J. Christopher Collier, MS, Readings: A Journal of Reviews and Commentary in Mental Health "The book is well-written. The authors have a talent for summing up theory and positions of others. The presentation of the material is excellent....is a sophisticated analysis of the problem which proposes a multicausally-based, comprehensive school-based intervention to deal with the problem. " --Harris Chaiklin, University of Maryland at Baltimore, Clinical Sociology Review "Violence among today's youth is one of the most serious problems facing American schools and society. In this book Goldstein, Conoley and other experts have compiled a reference for all teachers, parents, administrators and clinicians who confront this problem. This book represents the most comprehensive coverage of interventions that have proven effective with aggressive students. A special feature of the book is the authors' appreciation of the complex nature of student violence, including multiple causation and expression. In response to this complexity the authors have included chapters on interventions from preschool to adulthood, schools to homes, prevention to rehabilitation, individuals to gangs, policies to practice, perpetrators to victims, and various other topics. Despite the many topics covered, the book is extremely well written, organized, and integrated. This book not only has breadth of coverage, it also is rich in information, current statistical data, recent empirical research, and descriptions of many practical interventions that demonstrate treatment effectiveness. This book should be on hand in every school in America, and ought to be required reading in all teacher preparation programs. It is clearly the most helpful book I have seen on the topic of student violence." --Lawrence Lewandowski, Ph.D., Director of School Psychology, Syracuse University "The School Intervention Handbook is a rich and comprehensive sourcebook for efforts to reduce school violence. It covers the gamut between preventive strategies and interventions, from broad community based programs to specific teacher strategies. It also covers topics ranging from classroom management to gangs, preschool interventions to school campus security. It is filled with ideas. One of its biggest assets is the multiple perspectives which it provides, with professionals in a variety of roles contributing chapters. Each of these contain practical suggestions, ideas and advice. The variety of these perspectives reinforces the comprehensiveness of the book in covering what we know about interventions related to violence in schools. It also helps to emphasize the practical nature of the suggestions, the book is a handbook which can be used by practitioners to learn about, choose and adopt intervention ideas to use their own situations." --Reece L. Peterson, Associate Professor of Special Education, University of Nebraska, Lincoln "Goldstein and Conoley's School Violence Intervention Handbook is a seminal volume that addresses the pressing question, 'How do we establish safe schools conducive to learning in communities where the children not only survive, but also thrive?' Their work in this area leaves little doubt as to the significant contributions they have made to both theory and practice in an area where school administrators, teachers, and education support staff are hungry for relevant, research-driven, practical information leading to real change. Goldstein and Conoley, both scientists and practitioners, form a rare academic team that can speak to the problems of youth--and offer solutions that will change the face of school practice." --Ronda C. Talley, Ph.D., American Psychological Association
