Paperback. "The Roman Alphabet and Its Derivatives" is an insightful exploration of the foundational beauty and structural precision of classical Roman lettering. Centered on the iconic inscriptions found on the Trajan Column in Rome, this work by Allen W. Seaby provides a detailed study through the medium of wood engraving. The book serves as an essential reference for artists, typographers, and historians, examining how the proportions and forms of ancient Roman capitals have fundamentally influenced Western writing and typeface design across the centuries. The text offers meticulous reproductions of these monumental letters, highlighting their aesthetic elegance and technical construction. By documenting these ancient forms with artistic care, Seaby bridges the gap between classical antiquity and modern graphic arts, providing a timeless resource for anyone interested in the evolution of the written word. This work emphasizes the enduring legacy of Roman epigraphy and its role as the primary standard for uppercase lettering in the Latin alphabet, making it a valuable addition to the study of paleography and design history. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
