The “27 Club” refers to the many celebrities, mostly musicians, who died at 27. This creepy coincidence adds a layer of intrigue and infamy to already tragic incidents, and in “28” a variety of horror and science fiction authors take on the question: What if these artists had lived?
Rupert’s Necropolis, by Mark Wheaton – It’s been said that bluesman Robert Johnson was the original member of the 27 Club, but what if it was the Edwardian poet, Rupert Brooke? The romantic wordsmith died of sepsis mere days before he would’ve likely been blown to pieces at Gallipoli, and his brother was killed in battle on the Western Front just seven weeks later—are those striking double tragedies why Brooke’s poetry lives on in the lyrics of bands like Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd?
Sod It, by Curt Lambert – Brian Jones, founder, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist of The Rolling Stones was ousted from his beloved band on June 8, 1969, due to his ever-increasing erratic behavior and drug problems. Less than a month later, he was dead. The medical examiner said he drowned in his swimming pool but conspiracy theorists say it was murder most foul. But is there an altogether different, and quite fishy, hypothesis?
Olive Green Haze, by Graydon Schlichter – Before he was the six-string slinger known as Jimi “Purple Haze” Hendrix, he was Pvt. James Hendrix, a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. He didn’t take to military life (his constant guitar-playing in his off time annoyed his superiors) and was eventually discharged for medical reasons due to an injury following a botched plane jump. This allowed him to go to London to pursue his music. But what if he’d stayed in the army?
127 Fascination, by Staci Layne Wilson – Jim Morrison, lead singer of the acid rock group The Doors, had hit the skids personally and professionally when he fled to Paris, France, with his heroin-addicted girlfriend, Pamela. Within weeks, Jim died after suffering from a heart attack while taking a hot, late-night bath in their apartment. But there was no autopsy, and he was quietly buried in a private funeral days before his death was publicly announced. Did he fake his demise to escape his problems and start fresh?
Box-Shaped Heart, by LeeAnne Rowe and Dr Oolong Seemingly – Kurt Cobain, as the founder and lead singer of Nirvana, was the voice of Gen X and the godfather of grunge but he was also a textbook reluctant hero. As the burden of fame crushed his soul and psyche, his depression and addictions deepened, driving him to take his own life—did he willfully join the 27 Club, or was his outcome something altogether different?
I Don’t Wanna Go to Remus, by Staci Layne Wilson – Amy Winehouse was a pint-sized powerhouse singer, songwriter, performer, producer, and party animal – but the seemingly neverending bacchanal came to a screeching end one night after a shocking drinking binge. One of Amy’s biggest hit songs was about how she didn’t want to go to rehab, but what if she had tried it… on another planet?
