In 1890, the murder of New Orleans Police Chief David Hennessy shocked the city and drew national attention to a hidden criminal network.

What followed was not a single crime, but the beginning of a story that would unfold over decades.

Long before Prohibition, networks had already formed along the docks, in the markets, and within the city’s growing immigrant communities. After the Hennessy case and the events that followed, those networks began to take on greater shape and influence.

During Prohibition, New Orleans became a critical hub for smuggling and distribution, with the Mississippi River serving as a pathway for both legal trade and illicit activity. Over time, figures like Carlos Marcello refined this system, building lasting influence through business, labor, and political connections.

Drawing on contemporary newspapers, court records, and government investigations, this book traces the development of organized crime in New Orleans from its origins through its peak and eventual decline. It separates documented history from popular myth and reveals how power operated in ways that were often difficult to see.

A system built over time. A system that adapted. A system that endured.

A true crime history of the New Orleans Mafia, tracing its origins, rise, and lasting influence along the Mississippi River.
