Descripción del artículo del vendedor

Octavo. Half Morocco over marbled boards; [8],lxxxviii,viii,376,369-392p. Wanting the portrait, else a very tidy copy, the text fresh and unmarked, in a sympathetic 20th-century binding; Very Good. Translated by Stephen Whatley, though ours is the variant (noted in ESTC) with the translator's dedication unsigned. First published in Italian and French under the general title Les droits des souverains at The Hague in 1721, from which work this translation is taken. Sarpi (1552-1623), a Venetian Servite friar and scholar, Copernican and close associate of Galileo, is noted primarily for his History of the Council of Trent, in which he defended the rights of governments to attend to their internal civic affairs without interference from the Church. The current work expands that argument, and has been cited as an inspiration for the development of Enlightenment notions of republicanism and separation of church and state. ESTC T136585.
