If you read through history, you will notice that many of the main turning points were preceded by an outbreak of disease. We have small pox, the black plague as the ones that stand out the most. With the breakthrough in modern technology we have been able to successfully curtail many of these diseases. However, that does not mean we are immune from future outbreaks. For example, HIV may not be the bubonic plague, but it has devastated millions of lives and continues to do so despite the new drugs that control it.
