Good. No dust jacket as issued. ; 310 p. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 310 pages; A landmark report on opiate use in Philippines and Asia. Regarded as the first US Government effort to prohibit the use of narcotics. The report was commissioned by Roosevelt at the request of Protestant missionaries fearful of the effect of US Government sanctioning of Opium use by levying taxes on its traffic in the Philippines. The substantial report includes study of opium use and laws governing such use and traffic in Formosa, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Burma, Saigon and other Asian cities/states. Substantial amount of primary data including detailed tables of statistics relating to use and traffic-as well as copious amounts of subjective interview and statemnt evidence relating tot eh opiate trade. Rev Brent served as a commission memeber intent on promulgating new laws restricting the use of narcotics. Such was the effect of the report which is now recognized as the beginning of the US Government's efforts to curtail and criminalize the use of narcotics. Soundly bound copy with complete contents.
