A Privilege Withheld from a Catholic Peer [Trial]. Petre, Robert Edward, 9th Baron Petre [1742-1801], Complainant Dillon, John Joseph, Reporter. Report of a Case Argued and Determined in the Court of Exchequer, In Easter Term, 40 Geo. III., Between the Right Hon. Robert Edward Lord Petre, Plaintiff, And the Rt. Hon. Ld. Auckland, And Lord Gower, His Majesty's Postmaster General, Defendants, With an Appendix. London: Printed by Sampson Low, No. 7, Berwick Street, Soho; And Sold by E. Booker, No. 56, New Bond Street; And E. Brooke, Bell Yard, Fleet Street, 1800. [iv], 42, xlii pp. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in recent limp marbled wrappers. Light rubbing to extremities, lower-outside corner of front wrapper mended. Moderate toning to interior, light soiling to title page, a few smudges to inside of rear wrapper. $350. * Only edition. Dillon, a Lincoln's Inn barrister, published several works bearing on Catholic persecution. This one reports litigation preventing a Catholic peer from the right to free postage (franking), a privilege granted to peers in Parliament, who were then required to be members of the Church of England. This small matter is used to illuminate a larger issue: the exclusion of Catholics from Parliament. English Short-Title Catalogue T104083.…
