Paperback. "Repair of Ancient Buildings" is a seminal work in the field of architectural conservation, written by A. R. Powys, an influential figure in the preservation movement. This comprehensive guide serves as an essential manual for architects, builders, and historians concerned with the delicate task of maintaining historic structures without compromising their integrity or historical value. The text outlines practical methods for the structural repair and maintenance of ancient monuments and traditional dwellings. Powys emphasizes a philosophy of preservation over restoration, advocating for honest repairs that respect the original craftsmanship and materials. Detailed chapters cover a wide range of topics, including the treatment of masonry, timber frames, roofing, and foundations. The work provides technical advice on dealing with damp, stabilizing walls, and the appropriate use of mortars and plasters.Beyond its technical utility, "Repair of Ancient Buildings" is a vital historical document that captures the evolution of preservation ethics.
