Print on Demand. This book offers an enthralling journey through the annals of Syracuse, as remembered by C. Cheney and compiled by Parish B. Johnson. It presents a vivid picture of the city's humble beginnings and its remarkable transformation into a thriving metropolis. Through the author's keen observations and engaging anecdotes, readers are transported back to a time when the "Corners," as Syracuse was then known, consisted of a handful of houses and a modest tavern. As the city evolved, so too did its character, marked by a spirit of determination and resilience that shines through the pages of this captivating account. The book explores the various industries that shaped Syracuse's growth, such as salt production and the rise of the Erie Canal, while also delving into the lives of the city's early settlers and the challenges they faced. It offers a glimpse into a bygone era, preserving the memories and experiences of those who witnessed Syracuse's rise from a frontier settlement to a bustling hub of commerce and innovation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

We lived on Onondaga East Hill about two. Years. My brothers and myself went to school in an old log school-house to our wor thy citizen D. B. Bickford.
A tavern 'was kept there by Mr. John C. Brown, brother-ln-law to Harvey Baldwin, Esq.
Onondaga East Hill was then a place well adapted and frequently used as a rendezvous for regiments cf soldiers passing from the eastern states to the Niagara frontier.

Reseña del editor
In the following pages, the reader is presented with the personal recollections of Mr. T. C. Cheney, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the city of Syracuse.
These recollections consist principally of reminiscences of the early history of the city; (or rather of the village) its progress in population, wealth and importance, notices of the most important local events that have transpired within its limits, and brief sketches and anecdotes of several of the early inhabitants of the city and county.
They were prepared at our request, for publication in the columns of the Daily and Weekly Standard, and the interest manifested in their perusal, together with the universally expressed desire to obtain them in some better form for preservation, have induced the publishers to issue them in pamphlet form, for the convenience of the public.
Mr. Cheney has been intimately connected with the business and history of the city, and has taken an active part in its development and progress, from the period when it was a small settlement in the swamp, on the banks of the Onondaga Creek, until it has proudly taken its place among the cities of the earth, and can boast of as elegant buildings, enterprising inhabitants and liberal institutions as any other place of its size in the Union.
His recollections are given in a plain, discursive and unvarnished style, without any attempt at literary polish, and the typographical execution corresponds with the unpretending style of the work. But they claim the merit of truthfulness, audit is confidently believed that every citizen will be interested in their perusal.
