A Life of Quiet Leadership: Memoir of service, faith, and influence in 19th-century American evangelical life offers a portrait of a life spent in steady service and broad influence within the American church.
The memoir-style history chronicles a man whose work as missionary, educator, and church leader spanned decades of growth and change in 19th-century evangelical life. Reading this edition, you glimpse a life shaped by faith, discipline, and a quiet, steadfast drive to support and guide the church's mission.
- A detailed look at a physician of the church who served as a missionary in Ohio, a professor and president at the Western University of Pennsylvania, and a rector in Philadelphia.
- Insight into his roles as secretary of the Evangelical Knowledge Society and his collaborative work with figures like Dr. Tyng in St. George’s Church and Dr. John Cotton Smith in the Church of the Ascension, New York.
- Stories of influence beyond official titles, including being known as the “archbishop” of the evangelical party and shaping discussions across committees and boards.
- Reflections on the character and methods that helped him guide others, balance cautious judgment with clear leadership, and remain engaged in church life even when personal health limited direct action.

Reseña del editor
The notes from which these Records have been pre pared, were made during the active period of my life, for my own use, and without any thought of their ever being made public. Friends in whose judgment I have much confidence, have thought that as they refer to many actors and events, during periods of great interest and importance in our Church and coun try, their publication would serve a good purpose. I have, therefore, reluctantly yielded to their request that they should be printed.
Should any one reading these Records think my criticisms and judgments on some occasions too se vere, I would say that my notes were made at the time the events alluded to occurred, and expressed what I then thought and felt. I deem it more honest to leave them as they were then written.
It may be thought that too much of a personal nature has been introduced, but an autobiography must necessarily seem more or less egotistical.

Descripción de la tienda
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
