Print on Demand. This book details the historical significance of the Spanish-American War, charting a conflict borne from rivalry and contrasting national qualities between Spain and the English-speaking world. The author positions this war as one phase in a centuries-long struggle, contextualizing it within the broader history of Spanish decline and the rise of English-speaking powers on the world stage. The author examines the underlying causes of Spain's defeat, highlighting factors such as national pride, economic policies, moral decay, and religious intolerance. The book also explores the role of ideas emanating from the United States in inspiring Spanish American colonies to fight for independence. Through analyzing these factors, the author provides valuable insights into the dynamics of national decline and the power of ideas. The author further discusses the significance of the war for the United States, showing how it marked the end of Spain's presence in the Americas and the rise of the United States as a global power. The book delves into the challenges and responsibilities faced by the United States in its new position, emphasizing the need for administrative efficiency and the spread of liberal ideals. Ultimately, this book underscores the profound impact of the Spanish-American War on both Spain and the United States. It offers valuable lessons on the interplay of national character, political ideals, and global power dynamics, making it a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in history, international relations, or the rise and fall of nations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

In discussing the historical significance of the recent war with Spain, I am conscious of the difficulties in the way of reaching satisfactory judgments concerning great events that lie partly in the experience of the immediate past. We know less about this conflict than the scholars of the next generation will know. Its significance, like the significance of any important contemporary social movement, is not yet unfolded, and consequently no man may read it. Whatever judgment is rendered to-day touching the late war between the United States and Spain is only such a judgment as may be revealed by the light of the history of these two nations; and in this light the struggle appears as a phase of the centuries-old conflict that has arisen from antagonistic national qualities and divergent national policies.
